How Much Caffeine Is in a Cup of Coffee?

Millions of cups of coffee are consumed every day worldwide, making it the most popular stimulant on earth. The caffeine provided by coffee is what makes it such a beloved morning beverage. Caffeine, medically known as trimethylxanthine, is found naturally in a variety of plants and is also produced synthetically. It works as a psychoactive stimulant to the central nervous system of the body. Regardless of whether it is natural or synthetic, when caffeine is consumed, it takes approximately 45 minutes to absorb and three hours for its effects to wear off.

The amount of caffeine in a cup of coffee

Various findings indicate that an eight-ounce cup of coffee contains anywhere from 95 to 135 milligrams of caffeine. A plain brew cup of coffee contains the higher end at 135 milligrams, while a cup of instant coffee is at the lower end at 95 milligrams. It is a common misconception that decaffeinated coffee does not contain caffeine when in reality, decaffeinated coffee contains 5 milligrams of caffeine. The amount of caffeine contained within espresso, lattes, iced coffees and cappuccinos is considerably different than that of a cup of coffee. The addition of flavored syrups, sugar, milks and creamers are not contributing factors to the estimates of 95 to 135 milligrams in a cup of coffee.

Remember, how much caffeine is contained within a cup of coffee and the lasting effects are dependent on the amount of coffee that is consumed. Recognizing the type of coffee and any additives of sugar and creamer can make a difference to the amount of "rev" in an individual's morning engine.
