FAQs About Different Methods of Grinding Coffee

Grinding coffee seems simple. You start with a whole bean and end up with smaller pieces of the whole bean; however, this process is not as simple as it seems. There are several methods for grinding coffee, and each one has its own advantages. These FAQs about different methods of grinding coffee are a good starting point to build your knowledge.
- Q: Are blade grinders good choices?
- A: Blade grinders work well for most people who make their coffee in drip makers or French presses. They do a great job with the larger grinds that are needed for these brewing methods; however, they are not as good when making espresso and Turkish coffee.
- Q: Should you use a burr grinder?
- A: If you plan on making solely espresso, Turkish coffee or other small grinds, it is probably worth investing in a burr grinder. This is more expensive than a blade grinder, but it does a better job with finer grinds as it gets them more even and allows for a smoother perk.
- Q: How do you use a blade grinder?
- A: Learning to use a blade grinder well takes some time. You need to know how fine the beans are just by looking at them and how long you must press down on the button in order to get them that way. Start with about 2 tbsp. of beans per cup and go slowly at first. Shake the beans around a little between grinding spurts, so they end up ground evenly. Do not just push down on the button and hold it because this does not result in an even grind.
