In 1985, Mayan farmers from more than 100 rural communities in the diocese of Sierra Madre de Chiapas came together to form the cooperative Indigenas de la Sierra Madre de Motozintla, or ISMAM. Theirs was an incredible effort to fight against the grinding poverty and exploitative coyote coffee prices threatening their families. They worked together to address their common needs for technical assistance, processing equipment, and direct market access. NICARAGUA FAIR TRADE ORGANIC MANCOTAL The Unión de Cooperativas Agropecuarias Unidas de Mancotal was formed on June 20th, 2001 by 320 small producers in southwest Jinotega. 140 of the members are organic certified by OCIA, and our Organic Mancotal comes from these farmers. With a total organic production area of 160 hectares, the average altitude of the member farms is 1000 meters. The major cultivar is Caturra (90%), with Pacamara, Bourbon, and Catuai accounting for the remaining production.
