Coffee Terminology: Cappuccino, Espresso and Coffee

Some coffee-lovers just want a good “cup o’ joe.” They do not care whether you call it espresso, cappuccino or coffee. For a growing number of coffee aficionados, however, the distinctions between these caffeine-containing terms make quite a difference. The ubiquity of coffee shops and staggering variety of coffee-related beverages make for quite a high coffee IQ these days. Raise your cup to this review of coffee terms, and raise your coffee IQ.

Cappuccino—a highly specific way to enjoy espresso

Two shots of espresso with a dollop of steamed milk perched atop—not blended in—make a cappuccino a cappuccino, at least to Italians. While Americans have played around extensively and stretched the term past its limits, a cappuccino’s frothy goodness warms the belly.

Espresso—a highly specific method of brewing

Force hot water using nine to ten bars of pressure through very finely-ground coffee beans, and the result is espresso. The process requires a special pressure-based brewing machine and its accompanying accessories to properly produce the crema-topped delight that is espresso. Crema—the reddish-brown froth that tops a shot of espresso—results from the expansion of coffee’s natural oils during the brewing process. Another important distinction of espresso is that it has less caffeine than coffee, due to the shorter time water remains in contact with the grounds.

Coffee—just a good old cup o’ joe

Coffee trees grow all over the world, and sophisticated drinkers tell you that the flavor of coffee reflects where it is grown. The roasting process affects the flavor as well; the less time spent roasting, the lighter the flavor and the higher the caffeine content. Whether coffee is dripped, percolated, French-pressed or steeped, it remains one of the most popular beverages in the world. It tastes wonderful and provides a critical pick-me-up just when you need it.

Next time you pick up a cup of coffee, take a moment to realize that people all over the world are doing exactly the same as you—enjoying a warming cappuccino, a jolt of espresso or just a good heart-warming "cup o’ joe." Cheers to this global ritual.
